Dental Emergency: If You Have Pain, Swelling or an Injury, Message Us Now

If you have toothache, swelling or an injury, message our WhatsApp line; during working hours (Monday to Saturday, 08:00–21:00) we reply within thirty minutes and, depending on the clinical findings, arrange an appointment the same or the following day. Life-threatening emergencies: If there is widespread facial swelling, a high temperature, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department without delay — this goes beyond what a dental clinic can manage and can worsen within hours.

What counts as an emergency?

Symptoms that mean you should message us without waiting.

Severe toothache

Pain that painkillers do not relieve, that keeps you awake, or that worsens on chewing or with heat and cold. In most cases it points to inflammation of the pulp; early root canal treatment saves the tooth.

Gum or facial swelling (abscess)

An abscess does not resolve on its own; antibiotics only slow its spread and do not treat the cause. If the swelling reaches below the eye or down the neck, or if there is a fever, do not delay.

A knocked-out or broken tooth (injury)

For a tooth knocked out completely, the first 30 to 60 minutes are critical — follow the first-aid steps below and contact us immediately.

A broken filling, crown or veneer

Exposed tooth tissue becomes sensitive and vulnerable to decay. Keep the broken piece; in some cases it can be bonded back.

Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction

Bleeding that does not stop within hours despite pressure on a gauze pad, or severe pain beginning two to three days after an extraction (dry socket), needs assessment.

Orthodontic emergency

A wire digging in or a broken attachment; soft wax gives temporary protection and an appointment is arranged.

First aid for injuries

If a tooth is knocked out, the first 30 to 60 minutes decide the outcome.

If an adult (permanent) tooth is knocked out completely: hold the tooth by the crown, not the root; never scrub or brush the root. If it is dirty, rinse it for a few seconds in milk or saline. If you can, place the tooth gently back in its socket and come in biting on a clean piece of gauze; if that is not possible, transport it in a glass of milk or saline — never dry. Teeth replaced within the first hour have a markedly better chance of taking.

A knocked-out milk tooth is not put back — it can damage the developing permanent tooth beneath. Keep the tooth and bring your child in for an examination; the neighbouring teeth and the jaw are checked.

If a tooth is broken: keep the fragment in milk or saline; in some cases it can be bonded back with an adhesive technique. If a sharp edge is cutting the tongue, dental wax can be applied temporarily.

✓ Do

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek at 15–20 minute intervals for swelling · keep your head raised · rinse gently with warm salt water · take the painkiller your dentist has recommended · eat soft, warm food.

✗ Do not

Do not place aspirin on the painful tooth (it burns the tissue), and avoid aspirin where there is bleeding · do not apply a hot compress (it can increase swelling) · do not try to burst an abscess · do not start antibiotics on your own initiative · do not cancel the appointment because the pain has gone — pain settling usually means the nerve has died, and the infection continues.

About dental emergencies.

My toothache started at night, at the weekend or on a Sunday — what should I do?

Message us on WhatsApp — you will get a priority reply when we open. To get through the night: a cold compress, keeping your head raised and a painkiller on your dentist’s advice. If there is facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department without delay.

Do you charge for an emergency appointment?

The first consultation is free of charge. Any treatment needed after the examination is priced in writing before it is carried out; nothing is done without your approval.

Will an abscess clear up with antibiotics?

Hayır — antibiyotik yayılımı sınırlar ama kaynağı (enfekte pulpa ya da diş eti cebi) tedavi etmez. Kalıcı çözüm root canal treatment, periodontal tedavi ya da gerekiyorsa çekimdir. Kendi kararınızla antibiyotik başlamayın.

Can I rinse a knocked-out tooth under the tap?

Do not rinse it under the tap for any length of time and never scrub the root; the cells on the root surface are vital for the tooth to take. A brief rinse in milk or saline is enough.

Should I bring the piece of my broken veneer or crown?

Yes — bring it in milk or saline. Bonding it back is not possible in every case but it helps the assessment; if not, a quick replacement is arranged in our in-house laboratory.

I am travelling from outside Istanbul — can I be seen the same day in an emergency?

You are prioritised the same day according to the clinical findings; messaging us on WhatsApp with a photograph before you set off lets us plan the appointment precisely.
