Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most often about our clinic, our treatments, our clinicians and our processes, with the answers. If you cannot find what you are looking for, do get in touch.

What treatments does your clinic offer?

Our practice offers the full range of treatments in the Turkish Dental Association guidelines: implant surgery, All-on-4/6, root canal treatment and microscopic retreatment, veneer and zirconia restorations, smile design, orthodontics and Invisalign, paediatric dentistry, gum treatment, oral surgery (including sinus lifting and bone grafting), and bruxism and TMJ treatment. All work is carried out to the same standard under the responsibility of a single clinician.

What is the difference between a specialist endodontist and a general dentist?

Endodontics is a speciality focused on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the tooth roots and the canal system. It requires four years of further academic training after a general dental degree. In complex root canal treatment, in redoing failed root canal work and in assessing the options for saving a tooth, a specialist assessment directly affects the outcome.

How did you choose your clinicians?

We hold to an academic line that begins with our founder, Prof. Dr. Semih Özbayrak. Our Clinical Director, Specialist Endodontist Cansu Öztürk, completed her specialist training in Prof. Özbayrak’s department at Marmara University; she joined the practice in 2014 and took over its leadership in 2019. Specialist Dentist Zerrin Engin Bakkal, who joined us in 2024, is also a Marmara graduate with thirty years of uninterrupted practice since 1995.

How many years does a dental implant last?

For an implant that has been correctly planned, placed with a quality implant material and kept under regular review, more than twenty years of function is a realistic expectation. Our clinic does not use claims such as a “lifetime guarantee” that cannot be substantiated; instead we commit to written, concrete periods: 10 years on the implant body and 5 years on crown and veneer restorations.

Which brand of implant do you use?

We use only Straumann (Switzerland) and Nobel Biocare (Sweden/USA) for all implant work. The lot number, manufacturing information and certificate records for every implant are entered in writing in your treatment file. Your documentation can be checked by any dentist in Turkey through the manufacturer’s official verification system.

Is implant surgery painful?

Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthesia; no pain is felt during the operation. Mild swelling and tenderness in the first two to three days afterwards is to be expected and can be managed with the painkillers prescribed. For suitable patients, treatment under sedation can also be offered as an option.

How can you tell a counterfeit implant?

A genuine implant comes with a lot number, a manufacturing date and a certificate provided by the manufacturer. Our clinic records this information in writing in your treatment file for every Straumann and Nobel Biocare implant. Your documentation can be checked through the manufacturer’s official verification system or by any dentist in Turkey. We would advise you to avoid clinics that will not give you a lot number or that use vague phrases such as “premium brand”.

How many appointments does root canal treatment take?

Depending on the complexity of the case, root canal treatment can be completed in a single appointment or spread over two to three. Acute infection, the complexity of the canal anatomy and previous treatment all affect the number of appointments. At our clinic every root canal treatment is carried out by a Specialist Endodontist; advanced cases are worked under the microscope.

What difference does microscopic root canal treatment make?

The microscope provides a view of the canal system at more than ten times magnification, allowing canal structures and fine cracks invisible to the naked eye to be found. In redoing failed root canal treatment (retreatment) and in cases with complex canal anatomy it significantly increases the clinical success rate. All complex canal cases at our clinic are carried out under the microscope.

Should I have root canal treatment or an implant?

A natural tooth that can be saved is always preferred over an implant — this is a founding principle of the endodontic speciality. If the tooth can be saved with root canal treatment, that is recommended rather than extraction. The implant option is considered only where the tooth is too damaged to be restored, or in cases such as root fractures or advanced periodontal loss. The decision is made through individual clinical assessment.

Are zirconia crowns harmful?

As a material, zirconia is biocompatible and a restorative material with strong clinical evidence behind it. The perception that it is “harmful” usually comes not from the material but from aggressive tooth reduction during treatment or from a poor choice of indication. At our clinic a zirconia crown is recommended only where the indication calls for it; conservative alternatives (composite bonding, minimum-prep veneers) are considered first.

Which is better, a veneer or a zirconia crown?

Which option is suitable depends on the anatomy of the case. A porcelain veneer is placed with 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel reduction on the front surface of the tooth alone; it is the conservative method and can preserve the vitality of the tooth. A full crown requires material to be removed from every surface of the tooth; it is preferred for advanced decay, extensive restorations or after root canal treatment. The decision is made by weighing aesthetic and functional needs together.

Can a laminate veneer be reversed?

It is not a “fully” reversible treatment in the classic sense, because 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel is reduced. That said, this is a far smaller change than the extensive loss of tooth structure a full crown involves. A veneer can be changed, removed and replaced. Carried out with the right technique, the vitality of the tooth is preserved.

How long does smile design take?

The smile design (Digital Smile Design) process can take between two and four weeks depending on the complexity of the case. Digital photographs and impressions are taken first; a mock-up is made and tried in your mouth. Once you have decided to go ahead, the restorative work is usually completed in two appointments. We never begin an irreversible procedure without you seeing the result first.

What is the guarantee period?

Our written guarantee periods are concrete and are signed and dated on your treatment documentation: 10 years on the implant body, 5 years on crown and veneer restorations, 2 years on endodontic retreatment and 1 year on soft-tissue procedures. We do not use “lifetime guarantee” style claims that cannot be substantiated.

Is there an extra charge if a problem arises within the guarantee period?

No additional charge is made for work covered by the guarantee. The guarantee covers implant problems arising from a manufacturing fault, fracture or discolouration observed in the restorative material, and situations arising from an error in treatment. Situations that fall outside the guarantee (for example trauma, or periodontal disease resulting from inadequate oral hygiene) are set out clearly in the guarantee document.

Is the guarantee given in writing or verbally?

The guarantee is given in writing and signed. The guarantee document is handed to you once treatment is complete; the cover, the period, the exclusions and the follow-up protocol are all set out clearly in it. Giving you a verifiable record rather than a verbal promise is one of our clinic’s founding principles.

Does Turkish social security cover dental implants?

Turkish social security provides limited support for implant treatment only in specific circumstances (for example after trauma or in certain documented medical situations); it does not cover routine aesthetic or functional implant work. If you have private health insurance or a complementary policy, the cover may be broader. For details you can look at our page on the insurers we work with.

Do you work with private insurance companies?

We work with Allianz Sigorta, Axa Sigorta, Agesa Hayat Emeklilik, Quick Sigorta, NN Hayat Emeklilik and Ethica Sigorta. For these insurers we handle the pre-authorisation and invoicing process directly, so you do not have to deal with extra paperwork or claim the money back afterwards.

Do you handle direct billing and pre-authorisation?

Yes. For patients with our partner insurers, the pre-authorisation application, the approval process and the invoicing are all handled by the clinic. Nothing further is asked of the patient. Your policy’s dental cover and any co-payment are clarified during the consultation.

Is the first consultation charged?

The first consultation is free of charge. During the consultation, which lasts about an hour, we listen to your concern, carry out a clinical examination and take imaging if needed. At the end of the appointment you are given a written treatment plan setting out the alternatives, the timescales and the total cost.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any existing X-rays or CBCT imaging you have, or a treatment plan from a previous clinic. A list of the medicines you take and any reports on systemic conditions are helpful for the assessment. The consultation can go ahead without them; any imaging needed is taken at the clinic.

Roughly how long does the first appointment take?

The first consultation takes about an hour. That covers assessing your concern, the clinical examination, imaging if needed and preparing the written treatment plan. In complex cases a further imaging or assessment appointment may be recommended.

What should I do in a dental emergency?

For severe pain, swelling, a fractured tooth after trauma or a suspected abscess, call the clinic directly on +90 212 232 00 82 during working hours. WhatsApp is also a channel where you will get a quick reply. For emergencies we try wherever possible to open an appointment the same or the following day. Outside working hours our emergency line is monitored via WhatsApp.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

We try to keep space in the diary so that we can open same-day appointments for dental emergencies. When you reach us by telephone or WhatsApp, the earliest suitable time will be offered according to your situation. Routine consultations can usually be arranged within two to seven days.

How do I reach you in an emergency outside working hours?

Outside working hours (evenings and Sundays) our WhatsApp line is monitored. When you send us written details of the situation, you will be telephoned as soon as possible if it is critical. In a life-threatening emergency (head trauma, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing) you should call the emergency services on 112 or go to the nearest hospital dental clinic.

I live outside Istanbul — how can a treatment plan be put together?

For patients coming from Ankara, İzmir, Bursa, Antalya and other cities, a video consultation is the first step in the assessment. If you have existing X-rays we would ask you to share them via WhatsApp; Dr Cansu reviews them and a draft treatment plan is drawn up during the call. A definitive written plan is given at the clinical consultation; the treatment schedule is planned around your anatomy.

How does follow-up after treatment work?

Once your treatment is complete, a 24-hour line is kept open via WhatsApp. Video review appointments are arranged where needed. Reminders are sent for periodic check-ups (usually at 6 and 12 months). Any problem covered by the guarantee is put right at no additional charge.

Do you provide clear aligner (Invisalign) treatment?

Yes. Our clear aligner cases (including Invisalign) are planned and monitored by a certified Invisalign provider orthodontist we work with; the digital impressions are taken with the iTero scanner at our clinic. For details you can see our clear aligner page.

How many hours a day should clear aligners be worn?

They need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day for an effective result; they are taken out only for eating and brushing.

Which is better, clear aligners or braces?

It depends on the case: for mild to moderate crowding, clear aligners offer the advantage of appearance and comfort; in advanced and complex cases braces give more controlled results. The decision is made together following an orthodontic examination and iTero digital analysis.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

This varies with the extent of the case; a few months for mild cases and up to 12 to 18 months for extensive ones. The exact duration is set out in your written plan after the iTero simulation.
