The procedure

How is a dental implant placed?

Diagnosis and 3D planning

A panoramic X-ray and, where needed, a three-dimensional scan (CBCT) are used to assess bone volume and the proximity of nerves and sinuses; the position of the implant is planned in advance.

Placing the implant

Carried out under local anaesthetic, in most cases within 30 to 60 minutes. You feel no pain during the procedure.

Fusing with the bone

Time is allowed for the implant to integrate with the bone (osseointegration); how long depends on the case and the bone structure. Temporary solutions can be fitted during this period.

The permanent restoration

Once integration is complete, an impression is taken and the permanent crown or prosthesis is fitted. Regular check-ups support its long-term life.

Planning

Implant success begins with planning.

Placing an implant in the right position, at the right angle and to the right depth depends on the quality of the imaging and the planning. Before every implant case at our clinic, bone volume is measured, anatomical structures (the nerve canal, the floor of the sinus) are marked, and the surgery is planned accordingly.

What if there is not enough bone for an implant?

Bone grafting

Where bone volume is insufficient, a graft (bone granulate) builds the area up so the implant can be placed on a solid foundation.

Sinus lift

Where the floor of the sinus has dropped in the upper jaw, raising the sinus creates room for the implant.

All-on-4

For a completely edentulous jaw, a fixed bridge is carried on four implants placed at an angle where the bone allows; in most cases this reduces the need for grafting.

A whole arch missing

If all the teeth are missing: the All-on-4 protocol.

A full arch does not need one implant per tooth: in the All-on-4 concept, a fixed bridge is carried on four implants placed at an angle in the jaw, and in suitable cases temporary fixed teeth can be fitted the same day. We work to the original protocol of Nobel Biocare, who developed the concept.

Long-term life

How long does an implant last, and how is it looked after?

A well-planned, well-maintained implant works for decades — the literature holds follow-up data of more than twenty years. Three things decide the outcome: hygiene around the implant (an implant can develop peri-implantitis, much as a tooth develops gum disease), smoking, and regular check-ups.

Every implant patient at our clinic is given an individual care protocol, and annual check-ups are also a condition of our ten-year written guarantee. If the crown wears over the life of the implant body, only the crown is replaced — the implant stays where it is.

General health, bone structure and gum health are assessed at the examination; where a natural tooth can be saved, our priority is always to keep the tooth — extraction and an implant are recommended only when it cannot be saved.

What determines the price of an implant?

The price of implant treatment depends on the number of implants, the restoration chosen (crown, bridge or denture) and any preparatory work such as grafting or a sinus lift. After the consultation and imaging, your individual price is given to you as a written quotation.

The price in that written quotation stays fixed for the duration of the treatment — unless the plan itself changes, there are no extras and no surprises.
