Zirconia Crowns: Who Needs Them, and Who Does Not?

A zirconia crown is a full-ceramic crown built on a zirconium dioxide substructure. It contains no metal, its translucency removes the grey shadow seen with metal-backed crowns, and it withstands heavy chewing forces. The first thing anyone considering having zirconia crowns in Istanbul should know is this: zirconia is a strong option, but it is not the right answer for every tooth.

Our clinic’s conservative principle applies here too: if the goal at the front of the mouth is purely aesthetic, the veneer, which removes far less tooth, comes first; zirconia is kept for cases where the indication genuinely calls for a crown. Being honest about that distinction protects you from unnecessary tooth reduction.

When is zirconia the right choice?

Teeth with extensive loss of structure

Where extensive decay, a fracture or a large old filling has left no sound enamel for a veneer to bond to, a crown covering the tooth all round is needed — and zirconia is the first candidate.

Back teeth after root canal treatment

Molars that become brittle after root canal treatment are protected with a zirconia crown that withstands chewing forces.

Heavy chewing forces and bruxism

At the back of the mouth and in patients with a history of clenching, durability comes first; zirconia or monolithic options are considered case by case.

Implant-supported crowns

Implant-supported fixed teeth use zirconia substructures milled with CAD-CAM; production is carried out in our in-house laboratory yürütülür.

When do we advise against it? Where the aim at the front is only to correct colour and shape: instead of a full crown, which requires removing some 60–70% of the tooth, we prefer a veneer placed with 0.3–0.5 mm of reduction, or in suitable cases a no-prep veneer . An honest answer

The “are zirconia crowns harmful?” worry.

Zirconium dioxide is a highly biocompatible material, also used in medicine for hip replacements; it is safely chosen for patients with a metal allergy and does not discolour the gums. The real source of the “harmful” perception is not the material but poor treatment: sound teeth reduced unnecessarily, ill-fitting margins and restorations that disregard gum health cause problems with any material.

The condition of the tooth is assessed and the question of veneer or crown is answered honestly. The plan and the price are given in writing.

Preparation and digital impression

The tooth is prepared for the crown and an impression is taken with the iTero digital scanner — no uncomfortable impression paste.

In-house production and try-in

The zirconia substructure is milled by CAD-CAM in our in-house laboratory; the shade and the marginal fit are confirmed at a try-in.

Cementation and review

Once the fit is approved the crown is cemented, the bite is checked, and care advice and your guarantee document are handed over.

Do zirconia crowns damage the tooth?
